Spotlight on Rasmus Höjgaard
23.08.2022
Beware of confusion: the Danish twins Rasmus and Nicolai Höjgaard will be starting at the Omega European Masters. They look exactly alike and it is said that only their mother can tell them apart. The two 21-year-olds have risen to the top of the world rankings in three years - including the almost game-free pandemic year of 2020. In 2019, they were again at the start of the Challenge Tour, including at the Swiss Challenge in Hildisrieden, Canton Lucerne.
On the high board, Rasmus Höjgaard gained special status a year ago. He won the Open with a fantastic final round of 63 shots (7 under par), one shot ahead of the famous Austrian Ryder Cup player Bernd Wiesberger. Rasmus would love to defend his title and imitate the new US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, who triumphed in Valais in 2017 and 2018 - as the first back-to-back winner since Severiano Ballesteros (1977 and 1978). Rasmus Höjgaard has the makings of another triumph - it would be his fourth on the European Tour. But he could also be pushed to second place by Nicolai, as both are about as strong and successful.
Rasmus has the best cards in his hands to qualify for the European selection for the Ryder Cup at the end of September 2023 in Rome. This would be the next logical step in an exceptionally successful career. Unless we see the first twins in Ryder Cup history ?
