24 years later, a Valaisan makes the cut again on the Haut-Plateau
07.09.2024
It's a historic moment! Nearly 24 years after Steve Rey, a golfer from Canton du Valais has successfully made the cut at the European Masters. Yesterday afternoon, after completing his second round, Max Schliesing, a native of Zermatt, seemed to have almost lost all hope.
"This won't be enough. I'm 90% sure I'm eliminated. But this experience will stay with me forever. The crowd was amazing." The young Valaisan amateur, who currently lives in Texas, had just finished his first two rounds with a score of one under par. Though he imagined he’d soon be heading back to the United States, it's in Crans-Montana where he’ll spend his weekend.
Not only did his score allow him to make the cut, but it also made history — both his own and that of Valais golf. On his third attempt in a European Tour event, Schliesing passed this milestone for the first time in his career. He follows in the footsteps of Steve Rey, the last Valaisan to achieve this at Crans-Montana in 2000.
