Omega European Masters strengthens its commitment to sustainability: key innovations to watch
02.09.2024
Since 2019, the Omega European Masters has partnered with the GEO Foundation and bloomUp Agency to integrate sustainable practices into its event. In 2024, this commitment takes a new turn with several innovative initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and encouraging greater public participation in this collective effort.
Here are the key innovations for this year’s edition:
One of the most notable innovations this year is the opportunity for the public to directly contribute to carbon offset funding when purchasing tickets. This initiative allows spectators to actively engage in the fight against climate change. Additionally, extra barriers have been installed to protect sensitive areas around the Golf Club, further supporting the preservation of local biodiversity.
This year, special attention has been given to reducing the environmental footprint of glass bottles at all beverage stands. In addition, a resource management plan has been implemented to give materials a second life, further supporting a circular economy approach within the event.
Catering has also been revamped, with the replacement of individual portions of cream, butter, and sugar with bulk solutions. This initiative, deployed across the Village, reduces packaging waste and simplifies waste management, aligning with the sustainability goals set for the event.
Water resource management is a top priority this year with the installation of a new water metering system. This will allow for precise tracking of consumption to improve the use of this precious resource. In parallel, steps have been taken to optimize water management for the tournament’s temporary infrastructures.
Support for soft mobility has been enhanced with the introduction of a dedicated bicycle parking area, equipped with charging stations for electric bikes. This initiative encourages spectators to use more environmentally friendly modes of transport. In addition, a detailed tracking system for the transportation modes of players and caddies has been established to assess impact and continue optimizing logistics efforts.
A new step towards inclusion has been taken this year with the installation of a movable ramp to facilitate access for persons with reduced mobility. Improvements have also been made to signage and access points around the tournament site to make the event more welcoming to all.
