Five Swiss still dreaming of the cut
26.08.2022
Ten Swiss players have started the Omega European Masters 2022. After the first round, five of them still have a chance to make the cut on Friday and still be in the running this weekend in Crans-Montana.
On Thursday, Joel Girrbach was the best of the lot with a 67 (-3). He managed this score despite a double bogey on hole 14 and a bogey on 1. The rest of the course was exemplary. This 67 gives the 29 year old Thurgau native a couple of small jokers for the cut.
A junior creates a surprise
The surprise of the day for the Swiss came from Marc Keller. The 17 year old from Zurich, who plays part of the season with the juniors, finished the first round with a 68 (-2). This confirmed that he is in good shape after his success at the beginning of August in the Swiss Golf International Championship.
Benjamin Rusch (33), who is considered to be one of Switzerland's most promising golfers and is currently ranked 29th in the Challenge Tour rankings, also has a chance of seeing out the weekend. He played a 69 (-1), as did amateur Maximilien Sturdza. The 22 year old from Geneva and the Thurgau pro will have to do a little better on Friday if they want to make the cut.
Swiss No. 1 in trouble
As for the Swiss No. 1, Jeremy Freiburghaus (26), he has not yet said his last word, but with his card of 71 (+1) he has not managed the best round of his season. And yet, his season is quite simply excellent on the Challenge Tour, as he is currently 4th in the hierarchy of this division. A 2nd place at the Dormy Open in Stockholm virtually guarantees the Graubünden native a place on the DP World Tour next season.
