Usually in a professional tournament, after two rounds it's time to talk about the cut. Nothing is definite yet on this Friday evening at the Omega European Masters 2022. The reason: play was stopped in the afternoon due to a risk of thunderstorms. Indeed, the DP World Tour weather specialists preferred not to take any risks. As lightning is a real danger with golf clubs on an open course, it was important that safety was maintained.
Some of the flights did not make it back before dark. They will finish their second round on Saturday morning, before the tournament continues with tee times on holes 1 and 10.
Rain doesn't bother the leaders
This second round did not upset the hierarchy of the previous day as far as the top two are concerned. Alejandro Cañizares and Thirston Lawrence maintained the lead at -13. The Spaniard stopped after 13 holes and the South African after 14. They are ahead of Nacho Elvira from Spain and Marcel Siem from Germany at -10, who were able to reach the clubhouse.
Niklas Norgaard Moller was the most efficient player on the second day, with a round of 61. This mini exploit will allow him to pass the cut. But if the Dane wants to move up in the rankings, he will have to match his game on Friday and not on Thursday (+5).
Perhaps three qualifiers for the Swiss
On the Swiss side, Joel Girrbach kept the pressure on. After his 67 on Thursday, he shot a 69 on Friday. This 136 (-4) is more than enough to pass the cut. "It took me a few years to get there... I started badly again, but I fought my way back. At the halfway point of this Omega European Masters, my balance sheet is positive," commented the 29-year-old from Thurgau.
Benjamin Rusch (33) followed the opposite path to his compatriot, with the same result after two rounds: -1 on Thursday and -3 on Friday. "I'm happy to still be here for the coming weekend. This result of -4 is not so bad", explained the Swiss No. 2, also from Thurgau.
As for Marc Keller, he will have to wait until Saturday morning to know his fate. The 17-year-old from Zurich did very well in his first participation in the Omega European Masters. He finished his first round in 140 (-2 and par). He can therefore legitimately think about the cut.
