A successful 70th tournament
Exceptional weather, full of great players, satisfied partners. The 2016 OMEGA European Masters passed its final exam.
Sunday morning is traditionally reserved for the resumé from the tournament director. Yves Mittaz claimed his satisfaction of this year’s tournament: «The weather helped us a lot to have a great week. I am happy with the players, including the five players from the Ryder Cup and the few Americans, even if they did not play very well.»
The extension of the contract with OMEGA until 2022 is also a great satisfaction. It should be known that tournaments such as the Italian Open simply do not have sponsors. «It is fantastic to have faithful partners. But it is also our obligation to show them that we are moving forward, that we are putting everything in place to develop the event. Even if the event has turned 70, we keep looking forward», adds Yves Mittaz.
Concerning the future, the date of the 71st tournament is at the centre of speculation. The director of the OMEGA European Masters is not yet ready to say when the event will take place in 2017. «The European Tour has confirmed with us that the decision will be made in the next few days. We have requested the first weekend of July. However, at the time being, I do not know. The month of July would give us the possibility to bring top players such as Rory McIlroy or Sergio Garcia. In the summer everything is more festive and the weather generally more mild.»
At the moment the European Tour is fighting for its survival and looking for solutions. In the United States, word has spread that there could be a rescheduling of the FedEx Cup in August. All of these unknowns complicate the situation in the short-term, but open doors for the OMEGA European Masters in the long-term.
