Tournament report – Yves Mittaz: «We are privileged»
Yves Mittaz: «We are privileged»
The 2021 edition of the Omega European Masters has been, by far, the most difficult one to organize. First of all, because the Confederation only gave it’s approval for big events at the end of the month of May and second, because a never seen before Covid plan had to be put into place. «Before the tournament, the orders and counter-orders, have been multiplied, which made the situation very difficult to manage. Our team mastered it and we have been rewarded with the amazing week that we just witnessed.», comments Yves Mittaz, Head of the Omega European Masters.
In spite of peculiar conditions, this 74th edition has been a great success. The spectators have responded and, above all, they all manifested their pleasure to be able to gather once again on the Severiano Ballesteros course. The good weather has also greatly contributed to the success of this party. «Pre-sales have been very good. The Swiss spectators have remained very loyal. Sadly, we have lost people from abroad, that did not make it here. The English have been kept from coming by the Coronavirus and the Brexit. They simply didn’t show up. As a whole, in comparison with a normal year, we will only lose an estimated 10 to 15% in terms of attendance. It is completely unexpected», pursues the director of the l’Omega European Masters.
The management of the Covid plan occurred perfectly. But it has a cost: close to 400'000 Swiss francs to close down the course between 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m., as well as for the 500 tests that have been done since the beginning of the week. The Confederation will partially come up for these additional costs as its help program for sport events.
In this context, the financial situation of the Omega European Masters remains very good. «We are lucky to have loyal partners et who have already committed to stay at our side on the long term. We are privileged in comparison with other sporting events that are going to face issues when the health crisis ends», concludes Yves Mittaz. Therefore, on the Haut-Plateau, the renovation work on the Severiano Ballesteros course will continue. In Autumn, the holes number one, four and five will be re-made. It’s particularly important for a tournament of our standing to care for its installations year after year.
