Stars and favourites in a big crowd
Almost all the favourites, including Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia, have taken up excellent positions at the start of the Omega European Masters of professional golfers in Crans-Montana.
The French Michael Lorenzo-Vera and the 24-year-old Austrian Matthias Schwab took the lead after great rounds of 63 strokes each (7 under par). The renowned golf celebrities have attracted a great crowd this Thursday.
The Spaniard Sergio Garcia, US Masters Champion 2017, managed to get four strokes under par. One more stroke behind him follow the Englishmen Lee Westwood and Luke Donald, the public’s favourite Miguel Angel Jimenez and Northern Ireland superstar Rory McIlroy. The four-time winner of major tournaments showed a wild round. He played six birdies but suffered three strokes. The best among the favourites is the English Ryder Cup player Tommy Fleetwood, who did one shot better than Garcia.
Matthew Fitzpatrick got off to a tame start with a 70. However, he can still keep an eye on his goal of becoming the first player to win the Swiss tournament of the European Tour three times in a row.
The Swiss players did well in the first round. Mathias Eggenberger and Raphaël de Sousa are on the edge of the cut after the par-round. Last year, no Swiss reached the two final rounds.
