Do not underestimate Miguel Ángel Jiménez
The spectators’ favourite, aged 51, never leaves his cigar. However, a word of caution, behind the life-loving person there is a fearsome competitor.
From 1989 to 2014, Miguel Ángel Jiménez participated in every OMEGA European Masters, 26 consecutive times. In 2015, the tournament was rescheduled from September to July. A consequence for the Spaniard: at 51, he had to choose between the competition in Valais and the senior British Open. With a heavy heart, he went to England. However, this week the spectators’ favourite is again present on the Haut-Plateau.
Miguel Ángel Jiménez never hid his taste for large cigars, good wine and fast cars. Despite this he never forgets golf. Just like his friend Darren Clarke, he lights a cigar as soon as he enters the last put on hole 18. Furthermore, during press conferences, in the media room, non-smoking, he does not hesitate to ask for special privileges. In a natural way, Jiménez cultivates the myth that golf professionals live life well. However, not to be mistaken. To remain competitive on the European Tour and the Senior Tour, the golf player from Malaga has to train hard between tournaments. Since he has now passed the age of 50, he has to train even harder than the young generation.
The Spaniard fell to 171th place in world rankings. Nevertheless, he still has the potential to rival with the best players, at every tournament he participates in.
In case he is part of the leading roles on Sunday, he can count on the support from thousands of fans. Since in Crans-Montana, Miguel Ángel Jiménez has true star status. And the victory in 2010 still remains in everyone’s mind.
