The Omega European Masters 2019 celebrates its anniversary in style!

conférence presse sporting

2019 could be a record breaking year for the Omega European Masters which will take place from 29th August to 1st September. Not only is the tournament celebrating 80 years at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club but the impressive line up, including Rory McIlroy, has created un unprecedented frenzy of excitement leading to record levels of pre-sold tickets.

It is not very common for a golf tournament to be held year after year on the same course and benefit from such a strong tradition. This is the case for the famous Augusta Masters, the oldest of its type in the world, and the Omega European Masters, the oldest in Europe. Since the first time it was played on the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in 1939, the tournament has evolved significantly to become one of the most prestigious and appreciated on the European Tour.

To mark this jubilee alongside Omega’s 125th anniversary, the logo of Omega European Masters has had a facelift and will now integrate the emblem of this spectacular golf course : the Weisshorn.  « European » has disappeared from the logo but remains present in the name of the tournament.

In addition, the course has also gone through some important changes. The tees, fairways, irrigation, drainage and 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th greens have been adapted for the modern game, now offering high quality Par 3s and 5s. Investment has reached approximately 4 million swiss francs for these improvements.

Three events will be organized alongside the competition itself. Throughout the week, Credit-Suisse will donate CHF 200 for every birdie at the 8th in aid of the charity « Swiss School for Guide Dogs ». On Saturday 31st August, there will be a « Beat the Pro » in partnership with the foundation « Supporting Golf Together » created and financed by Swiss Golf, ASGI and Migros Golf Card. This will feature the best Swiss junior golfers doing battle with the pros on the 8th hole during the tournament. On the same day, four professional golfers will compete using the old fashioned clothes and clubs in a Hickory Challenge which will take place on holes 10 and 18 after the official day’s competition.

However, the real enthusiasm for the 2019 tournament emanates from the impressive list of players who have signed up. Thanks to a change in the US PGA Tour schedule, many stars from the world of golf have been able to confirm their attendance at the Crans-Montana tournament. At the top of the list is Rory McIlroy, from Northern Ireland, who held the no 1 status in the world for 95 weeks and is the holder of 4 majors. Alongside him, Sergio Garcia, Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Pádraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Danny Willett, Bernd Wiesberger, Matt Wallace, Miguel Ángel Jiménez et Alex Noren (to name but a few), will compete for the famous « red jacket » and the Omega European Masters trophy.

This professional tournament promises to be an exceptional event, from the level and quality of the players to the equally renowned celebrities from the world of sport and show business who will play the Credit Suisse Gold Pro-Am: Justin Timberlake, Dennis Quaid, Anthony Mackie, Niall Horan and Michael Pena.
