«I find similarities between skiing and playing golf"
Didier Defago participated in the Credit Suisse Silver Pro-Am. Skiers like to play golf. It is a good way to let off steam during the summer.
The launch of the OMEGA European Masters week took place Monday morning. It is traditionally the Credit Suisse Silver Pro-Am that starts things off. This competition, also called the Flory Van Donck trophy, brings together 38 teams made up of three amateurs and one professional.
Upon entering the clubhouse, the participants’ opinion was almost unanimous: excellent weather conditions, and above all a Severiano Ballesteros course in perfect condition, which made this day exceptional. «I know the 18 hole course of the Golf-Club Crans-sur-Sierre, not only because I have played there during the Credit Suisse Pro-Ams, but also because of my participation in events there throughout the year. When the course is ready for the championships, it is really different.», explains Didier Defago, Olympic downhill champion in 2010. The skier shared the game with Jean-Luc Rochat, head of French-speaking Switzerland for Credit Suisse, and host of this competition.
Skiing and playing golf go well together. Many experts on the White Circus like to relax on the greens. «It is also an excellent way to actively get back in shape. We play mostly in summer», adds the skier from Morgins, who finds many similarities between skiing and playing golf. «In terms of concentration, both sports are similar. For alpine skiing, an event can last four to five days with trainings and racing, just like in a golf tournament.» Didier Defago (22.4 handicap) remains a competitor in his soul. Wearing a starting bib or having clubs in his hands, he admits that he gets quickly involved in the game.
