Gaston F. Barras, Mr. golf from Crans-Montana
Gaston F. Barras heads the organising committee of the Swiss Open since 1964. However, his love story with golf and the event began long before then. «Golf is my life! In 1939, at the age of 8, I was already a caddy in the Open. I grew up with this tournament. I really saw it develop, to become what it is today.»
Gaston F. Barras, who is also the president of the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, actively participates in the development of the tournament, as well as the development of the golf course on the Haut-Plateau. Yves Mittaz, director of the Omega European Masters, is used to saying: «Without Gaston Barras, the event would not be what it is today. He has committed himself financially so that Crans-Montana is part of the European Tour.» He is also the person who named the tournament «European Masters», which has made it unique.
Former president of the commune de Chermignon (from 1965 to 84), Gaston F. Barras is also honorary president of the Swiss Golf Association and lifetime honorary vice-president of the European Tour. «Only ten people in the world have this title», concludes Mr. golf from Crans-Montana.
