TODAY some of the world’s top golfers, including Masters Champion Danny Willett and European Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke, arrive in Crans-Montana in the run up to the OMEGA European Masters commencing Thursday 1st September.

2016 is the 70th year that this prestigious event will have been hosted at Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, making it the longest running golf tournament at the same venue in Europe and second in the world after the Masters at Augusta National. Danny Willett will play to defend his title having won last year’s red jacket and coveted trophy competing against fellow Britons and Ryder Cup teammates Chris Wood, Andy Sullivan and Matt Fitzpatrick, as well as Lee Westwood, USA’s Bryson DeChambeau and Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez.

This year will see a celebration of this 70th landmark by exhibiting the milestones, the victories and the moments that have shaped the historic tournament and the game of golf. For the past month the golfers playing the OMEGA European Masters have been sharing intimate memories from their golfing past and encouraging fans to do the same using #GreatGolfTimes in order to build up an interactive timeline hosted on the tournament’s website www.omegaeuropeanmasters.com.

Past winner Lee Westwood explains “Having won the tournament in 1999, I’m looking forward to trying my luck again 17 years later. Winning or losing, the course at Crans-sur-Sierre is one of the most spectacular places to play in the world and it’s incredible to think that this tournament has been held here for 70 years. Make sure you keep watch on the Saturday of the tournament for a surprise event that takes us back through time...”

Yves Mittaz, Director of the Tournament, said “We are delighted to be celebrating 70 years at Crans-Montana and are proud to cement our legacy as the oldest running tournament played at the same venue in Europe. We hope golfing fans all around the world will enjoy the wonderful stories from as far back as 1939 and participate by sharing with us their golf moments too.”
