04-09-2005 : Sergio Garcia- Fourth round - 68. Total : 270 (-14)

Omega European Masters champion - you turned the tables on Luke this time. Did you feel in control ?

I was a bit concerned on the back nine. I played really well on the front nine and had a chance to get to 16 under on the ninth and didn't get the best of bounces then caught a bad lie on ten and didn't get up and down for par. Made a good up and down on 11 from a plug lie and that kept me going. Good save frome the bunker on 13 and played the 14th badly again. Routine. Three putted from long range. Unfortunately I didn't birdie 15 but I guesse my frien Maria all from the sky was watching me at the 16th. I had a little bit of speed but the perfect line and I was very fortunate it went in and two good pars to finish.

You said your friend only passed away a few day ago ?

Back in Tenerife. She has been fighting cancer for six, seven, eight months and unfortunately she couldn't handle it any more. We played a lof of amateur golf together. She was a wonderful amateur golfer, just my age, about 24 or 25. She went to study in the US and I think I found out about eight months ago that we had lung cancer. Yes, I spoke about her at the US Open. Such a lovely, caring person and it's such a shame that she's gone. That is life, I suppose. We are here one day and te next day we are gone. Her name is Maria Garcia Estrada. I dedicated the win to her.

Luke said it was game over when you holed at 16th

No, it wasn't game over. Don't get me wrong because I played 17 shocking yesterday and I felt I needed two pars. Paul could have finished birdie ad I have to give myself chances for birdie. I hit an okay drive on 17 and hit a good shot to 14 feet and hit a good tee shot on 18 and hit the same club as yesterday left on the pin and lagged it up close. It was probably about 22 feet at the 16th.

Seconde win on the season, pleased ?

Yes, very pleased. It was nice to see I was able to come through. I managed to putt well all week long. I maybe didn't make as many putts as on Friday but I felt pretty good all week. I hung in tough and chipped well. My game yesterday on the back nine wasn't as sharp as usual but it was nice to get it round.

How did your change in attitude help you today?

Well, I don't know, it was a really tough day. I wanted to do well for her and her familly and I almost tried too hard on the back nine coming down the stretch when I needed to hit good shots. I tried to stay calm, my caddie Glenn tried to keep me calm and 14 wasn't good. played it terrible last year and this year also. One of those things. I am gald what happened on 16. It's a nice hole to birdie to have a chance of winning the tournament. I knew I was tied with Gustafsson and knew Paul had just bogeyed 16. I wasn't expecting to chip it in. wasn't a great lie and hopefully I could make a good three and birdie on of the last two.

Does this prove something people who looked at the putting and said you were off form?

I said for quite a while now that my putting is coming. Stroke wise it is there. Feels good , just a matter of doing it getting it in my head over every single putt. It's not easy to do. It's easy to go downhill, I three putted the first for five and you can think :"here we go again" but I madea good one on the second.

Ryder Cuo?

It'sa good start but it's a long way to go. I have to keep playing well and get better at some things .That's the best start I can get and sur I will defenf my title next year.

Inaudible

It definetly did, probably towards the end of a couple of years ago I felt I couldn't make anything It didn't feel right. We worked to get the stroke right and get it back in my head that I can make putts. The green are firm and bumpy in the afternoons and it's tough to make the six footers.

Is it a special win?

Yes, because of my friend passing away . It was a difficult week.Yesterday morning when I found out it was a bit hit to my head and kept me down a bit
